Red, White & You: A 4th of July Love Story (with a DIY Twist)
Jul 02, 2025
There’s something magical about the 4th of July.
Maybe it’s the fireworks. Or the smell of grass and BBQ. Or maybe it’s the one holiday that invites us to show up just as we are—no pressure, no gifts, just sunshine, laughter, and maybe a sparkler (or two).
For me, it’s always been my favorite. As a kid, I loved the excitement (and the fireworks). Now, I love the simplicity. The reminder that sometimes, the most meaningful moments happen on porches, in backyards, and around old picnic tables.
During our spring trip to Agoura Hills, California, I stumbled into a little antique shop and found a collection of beautifully aged American flags. The faded reds, the creamy whites, the inky navy blues—they stopped me in my tracks. There’s something timeless about them. They hold stories.
Those colors? They’ve been on my mind ever since.
🖌️ A Little Patriotic Paint Inspiration
You don’t need to go full Betsy Ross to add a touch of Americana to your space. Even the idea of a red, white, and blue palette can transform something simple into something special.
Here are a few project ideas inspired by the stars and stripes:
-
A welcome sign in creamy white with bold red lettering
-
Painted planters—one red, one white, one blue
-
A front porch bench with a navy finish
-
A front door refresh in bold freedom red or classic navy
-
Simple wooden stars or firecrackers you can cut, paint, and tuck into a flower pot or window box
You don’t need fireworks to create a little wow... but maybe just a creative spark.
🎨 Paint Colors That Sparked the Idea
Our patriotic palette came together a little unexpectedly—just the way we like it.
-
Heirloom Red (HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams) – A bold, classic red with vintage warmth. The kind of red that feels both timeless and eye-catching.
-
White Flour (Sherwin-Williams)– Soft, creamy, and neutral enough to complement anything. It’s our go-to white for projects that need a clean slate with character.
-
Midnight Navy (or close to it) – We actually found this gem on the discount rack in the paint section. No label, just a rich, moody navy that instantly completed the trio. Sometimes the best finds aren’t even on the shelf.
🌟 Colors That Play Well with Red, White & Blue
Want to freshen up your patriotic palette without going full flag? These color companions pair beautifully with classic red, white, and navy—bringing warmth, contrast, and that perfectly lived-in feel.
Here’s what we love to mix in:
-
Warm Brass – A soft, golden neutral that adds instant vintage charm. Think old doorknobs, lanterns, or planter hooks.
-
Sage Green – Earthy and grounding. Pairs beautifully with red and navy for a colonial-meets-cottagecore feel.
-
Terracotta or Clay Pot – Adds sun-baked depth and rustic warmth. Gorgeous with creamy whites and deep blues.
-
Dusty Rose or Petal Mist – A romantic twist that softens bolder colors. This pairing is sweet, unexpected, and quietly patriotic.
-
Charcoal Slate or Iron Gate – Deep and dramatic. Use as an anchor color for balance and sophistication.
-
Sunbeam or Lemonade – A pop of yellow brings in cheer and contrast. Perfect for flower pots, chairs, or vintage signs.
These tones don't steal the spotlight—they just make the red, white, and blue feel even more special. It’s like finding the perfect frame for a favorite photo.
Don’t have a specific project in mind? That’s okay. Sometimes the best inspiration starts with a photo, a color, or a story.
